Walking and Running

Real or Unreal?

Last painting assignment of the semester. one realistic, one cartoony..

History mumbo jumbo

Art history final assignment.
I didn't put a whole lot of effort into it but I like the feel of the whole thing.

Animation Scene 1 Background

Feeling slow lately. Instead of finishing animation of Antonio running, I refined the scene 1 bg. Not sure how this will work in the animation. it may not get used.

Books Books Book from America.

My order has arrived from I'm especially liking the Art of Jon Foster.

Winter is Royally Fair.

Went to the Royal Winter Fair yesterday. Here are the pages I liked..
Please excuse the poor image quality. The sketch book is big and so I took photos of these.

I was going to take down notes for Art History class but the lecture was rather.. boring.

Some Caf. Sketching below.

It's funny how the moment you try to make something look good, it turns out to be crap. Sometimes you just gotta let your pencil go free.

Mimi's Salon
Gauche on Watercolour paper (11 x 8.5 inches)

Not as clean as I wanted but since I'm working very small for an animation background that can't be helped.. Brush sizes only go so small you know.

Update Nov. 4

I'm not too happy with the character colours but didn't want to spend so much time on it.
This is the line work I painted over.

Lol man.. I just realized.. Those characters are huge compare to the door... and the whole room. this is an oversight indeed. Well, lesson learned... the hard way.

It's been a while since I rendered anything.. probably due to simply things too much. Anyways. It was fun.. but rendering with col-erase is still pretty bad.

Critiques are greatly welcome. Help me improve. :)

Subway Dump

Downtown T.O.
Sketching from life is a great way to see what area I need to focus on.
Special thanks to Lorenzo :)

get animated!

After the guys subway sketch group, I went to the NFB's "Madame Tutli Putli - Behind the scenes" and listened to the directors, Chris Lavis and Maciek Szczerbowski, talk about their inspirations, process of the works in the making of the film. It was very inspiring day.

Orphen boy

Initial concept for the walk run character assignment. I'd like to play around with faces a bit more but the feeling and the size of the characters seem right.

Cherry Tossin'

Weight lift and toss. Here is mine. Enjoy :)

Monday, October 15, 2007

Back to concept stuff.

I forgot to bring animation stuff to school. so I sketched up a fortress/port.
These things never look good unless they are on perspective correctly.

Flipping is good way to see it the perspective is correct. As you can see here, it isn't :)

Pen and marker. Touched up with Photoshop.

Sister Rivalry

Drew it up for the acting class assignment.. the focus is on girl on the left.
I'm not quite sure how to make this work for the assignment yet.

While scanning some animal sketches for the life drawing class, I decided to scan this one as well and beef it up digitaly just for fun.

I don't know what is the deal with people colouring white outlines on their sketches. Is it a 'Silver' thing? I suppose it adds certain amount of appeal to a mediocre sketch.. so I tried it out..
You can bet that I will not be doing anymore white outlining in the future.

Happy Thanksgiving

Busy with lots of homework to do.. But being at home, its hard to get started on assignments like animation.. so to loosen up, I had fun sketching turkeys :)

I give thanks for.. my new 22 inch wide screen monitor.. its so kickass..
god, I crave brown turkey meat, cranberry sauce, mashed potato and gravy so badly..

Wave and sack animation

Wave, boat and sack animation. splashes ended up to be weak point. I'm not surprised since I sort of tack them on there after I did the surface details. I will squeeze time between assignments to clean this up and compose it. and fix the splash of course :)

Lift and Toss Character

Digitally cleaned with Photoshop :)

Sunday, September 30, 2007

I'm in love... with a tablet..again.

I just saw bunch of people doing digital clean ups on Youtube. It's really amazing how they get beautiful curves in one stroke or two.

Drawing inspired by life, technique inspired by other masters. I hope to do a light sketch like this once a day. This one took a little over an hour I think.. hopefully in the future it will take me 20 min max :)

.. and School began. - Tonal & Hobos

I didn't really want to put up school stuff here anymore but as long as school exists, I won't be putting out decent personal works so Here goes. It's nice way to see progress too I suppose.

First we have painting.. I purposely desaturated this black and white painting in Photoshop because.. once I added white to make the foreground object opaque, it became all blue. So without unfortunate tints from black and white and the paper colour, I can judge whether I made the tonal work or not better.

Next, my hobo design. I wonder if they look too generic.. :(
Playing around with some expression/interactions..

Korean Blockbuster D-WAR

D-War Trailer

Talks about the creation of the creatures (Korean)

So.. D-War was release in Korea on August 1, 2007 and soon to be release on September 14 in America. It's suppose to be 100% Korean CG graphics and it looks impressive. Impressive technology that is. As for the cinematography.. well, Director Shim isn't the most gifted director Korea has seen and by the looks of the trailer- as much as I'd love to promote Korea and all its awesome Korean goodness- it hurts my Korean soul little bit.

Still, I'll definitely check it out even if it kills me.

Rebuild of Evangelion 1.0: You Are (Not) Alone
